Overview

OneVoice has been in existence since the 2017–18 winter semester—the University of Cologne’s soprano/alto choir, founded by Dietrich Thomas and directed by Julia Reckendrees, has been led by Kathi Becker since May 2025. The choir’s repertoire is open-ended and not limited to any specific musical genre. From jazz, pop, world music, classical, and modern classics—anything is possible. On December 6, 2017, the choir made its debut as part of the university concert series. During the 2018–2019 winter semester, the ensemble performed in the auditorium alongside two guest choirs. After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the choir started the 2022 summer semester almost “from scratch.”
Due to high demand, the choir accepts only students. A valid student status is therefore an absolute requirement—ideally at the University of Cologne. Students from other universities may be admitted in certain cases. 

Leitung

Katharina Becker hat in Köln an der HfMT Lehramt für Gymnasium und Gesamtschule mit den Fächern Musik und Mathematik studiert und dabei ihre Leidenschaft für Jazz-Pop-Chorleitung und Vocal Arranging entdeckt. Seit August 2024 studiert sie an der Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Dänemark, im Master of Music für Rhythmical Choir leading. Neben dem Studium steht sie unter anderem mit ihrem Vokal-Ensemble aember auf der Bühne, schreibt Vocal-Arrangements, die u.a. von den Chören Vocal Journey, Second Circle und dem Jazzchor der Uni Köln gesungen werden. In ihrer Chorarbeit stehen das Experimentieren mit Sounds und das Entdecken des eigenen musikalischen Potenzials im Vordergrund. Gemeinsam mit den Sänger:innen erkundet sie, wie man mit der Stimme Emotionen wecken und Geschichten erzählen kann, die eine Verbindung zwischen den Sänger:innen und zum Publikum herstellen.

Rehearsals

  • During the semester: Wednesdays, 4:45–6:45 p.m., Music Room (Main Building)
  • Rehearsals begin: Wed, Oct. 7, 26 (one week before the start of the semester)
  • Rehearsal day: Sun, Oct. 18, 26, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. in the music room
  • Rehearsal weekend: Jan. 15–17, 27, in the music room
  • Semester break: no rehearsal

Get involved

Due to high demand, only students—preferably students from the University of Cologne—will be accepted. You can only join the choir at the beginning of each semester. To join, you must first attend a trial rehearsal, followed by an audition. You must attend both events.

Trial rehearsal: Wed, Oct. 14, 2026
Audition: Fri, Oct. 16, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m.
